Have you ever wondered what would happen if you took the competitive spirit of NASCAR and combined it with the newest in aerospace technology?

You’d have quite possibly the coolest thing that has ever happened to aviation entertainment—the newest and baddest sport of the 21st century—the Rocket Racing League. The modified airframe’s body carrying a 1,500-poundthrust rocket booster burning liquid oxygen and kerosene powers the Xracers at 300 mph.

The courses are laid out in digital 3-D so both the pilots and home spectators see the track as it is superimposed on their screens. The races consist of blasting rockets with fuel boosts lasting about 4 minutes followed by 10 minutes of glide maneuvering through the twisting course for 3 to 4 laps before pit stops.

Cameras situated along the track on balloons, chase planes, and the pilots’ cockpits give a true vision of speed and power. With prototypes logging more than 20 test flights to date, the league is expecting full racing seasons starting in 2008. Team ownership is open to anyone who can lay down the cash, so it’s not too late to get involved with your own team on the ground floor.
